(a) The Great Indian Desert has a harsh climate. The days are very hot
and nights are very cold. Due to extreme climate and scarcity of
water, it is difficult to grow plants in the Thar Desert. Only short
trees, thorny shrubs or plants like cactus, babool and keekar which
do not need much water to grow are found here. The desert is filled
with sand, rocks, sand dunes and sand hills. The winds in the Great
Indian Desert are hot, dry and strong.
(b) Many people in the desert lead a nomadic life. These people are
called banjaras. They move from one place to another in search of
water and fertile land.
(c) Canals are an important source of water supply in the desert region.
The Indira Gandhi Canal is one of the largest irrigation canals in
India. It irrigates a vast area of land in the Thar Desert.
