UNIT 1: Living World
1. Food Preparation
in Plants
Tickle Your Brain (Page 9)
ŠŠ The money plant could not get sunlight and could not prepare its food.
So, it died.
Tickle Your Brain (Page 10)
ŠŠ It will disturb the food chain. There would be grass everywhere.
Carnivores will also die because of the shortage of herbivores.
Let’s Recall
A. 1. (a) 2. (c) 3. (b) 4. (c) 5. (d)
B. 1. starch 2. Veins 3. soil 4. Stomata
C. 1. PHOTOSYNTHESIS 2. STOMATA 3. CHLOROPHYLL
4. STARCH
D. 1. (d) 2. (e) 3. (a) 4. (c) 5. (b)
Let’s Think and Answer
A. 1. The process by which green plants prepare their own food using
carbon dioxide, water and minerals in the presence of sunlight and
chlorophyll is called photosynthesis.
2. During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide from the air enters the leaves
and oxygen is released by the leaves through stomata.
3. Chlorophyll is a green substance that helps leaves to absorb sunlight.
4. The chain of food formed by organisms is called food chain.
B. 1. The different parts of a leaf are stalk, leaf blade, main vein and side
veins.
(i) S talk : Leaf is attached to the stem with the help of a stalk. It is
called petiole.
(ii) Leaf Blade : The flattened part of a Stalk Leaf Blade
leaf is called leaf blade or lamina. It
helps the leaf to trap the sunlight. Side
(iii) M ain Vein : Main vein or midrib runs Veins
along the middle of a leaf.
(iv) Side Veins : A number of side veins
arise from the main vein. They help Main Vein
to transport water, minerals and
prepared food to and from the leaf.
